Thomas and Uber Cup Finals Results: Double delights for China

China clinched both Thomas and Uber Cup crowns as the host regained their status as the top badminton nation in the world.

The hosts overcame Indonesia in the finals, marking the first time since 2012 that China won both the men’s and women’s titles at the world team championships.

In the Thomas Cup, the Chinese denied Indonesia—the most successful nation in the tournament’s history—their 15th title to capture their 11th in the process. China seal their 11th Thomas Cup win as the national men’s badminton players defeated Indonesia in the final 3-1, ending a six-year drought of the title.

Meanwhile, the ladies’ win marks the team’s 16th title in the Uber Cup.

Thomas Cup Final: China 3-1 Indonesia

• Shi Yu Qi beat Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 21-17, 21-6
• Liang Wei Keng/ Wang Chang beat Fajar Alfian/ Muhammad Ardianto 21-8, 17-21, 21-17
• Jonatan Christie beat Li Shi Feng 21-16, 15-21, 21-17
• He Ji Ting/ Ren Xiang Yu beat Muhammad Firki/ Bagas Maulana 21-11, 21-15

Jonatan Christie gave Indonesia a glimmer of hope to keep their Thomas Cup title hopes alive after overcoming a spirited Li Shi Feng in the second singles match.

Christie made a solid start to the clash, winning the opening game 21-16 before Li found his groove in the second and came close to winning the deciding third game. The Indonesian ace squandered an early 6-2 advantage in the second only to see Li go six points up. Li held on to the advantage to level the scores.

But Christie prevailed to clinch the game and give Indonesia a fighting chance heading into the second doubles match.

Host doubles’ He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu delivered a masterclass in the doubles match, winning 21-11, 21-15, over Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana to secure the Thomas Cup crown.

Uber Cup Final: China 3-0 Indonesia

• Chen Yu Fei beat Greogria Mariska Tunjung 21-7, 21-16
• Chen Qing Cheng/ Jia Yi Fan beat Siti Ramadhanti/ Ribka Sugiarto 21-11, 21-8
• He Bing Jiao beat Ester Wardoyo 10-21, 21-15, 21-17

Was it a total outclassed defeat for Indonesia? It’s safe to say so.

The closest Indonesia got was in the third match, with Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, in the biggest match of her young career, taking the fight to He Bing Jiao.

The 19-year-old was unfazed by the occasion and gave a good account of her abilities. Having taken the opening game and staying close in the third, Wardoyo had a shot of pulling Indonesia back in the contest from 0-2 down. However, He Bing Jiao’s superior experience and sense of opportunism helped her surge ahead at the end.

Indonesia’s slim chances hinged on Gregoria Mariska Tunjung breaking through in the opening match against Chen Yu Fei. Still, Chen never allowed her opponent into the contest. Tunjung looked too tight on the big occasion, while Chen scored winners at will. China’s lead was 38 minutes.
