Sudirman Highlights of Day 4

Group D witnessed the rampant 0-5 of South Korea over Asian counterpart Japan.

World number two An Se-young dominated Japan’s top-ranked Akane Yamaguchi 21-11, 21-15 in a match featuring two best women’s players right now.

Despite the whitewashing defeat, Japan will join hands with South Korea in the quarterfinals.

The similar battle happened over in Group C where Malaysia surpassed Chinese Taipei 4-1.

Malaysia ended up as group C’s winners with Lee Zii Jia’s one-sided win over Tien Chien in the men’s singles.

Following Lee Zii Jia’s pivotal victory versus Chou, Tai Tzu Ying pulled one back for Chinese Taipei by beating Goh Jin Wei 21-8, 21-10.

Malaysia topped Group C – Group of Death with a near-perfect record at the mixed badminton team event, having dropped just one match out of a possible 15.

The Southeast Asian powerhouse of badminton swept the men’s and women’s doubles, Ong Yew Swin/Teo Ee Yi and Tan Pearly/Thinaah Muralitharan defeating Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Han (21-8, 23-21) and Hsu Ya Ching/Teng Chun Hsun (21-15, 19-21, 21-15), respectively.

They will be joined by Chinese Taipei in the next round.

In the other Group C tie, India overcame Australia 4-1 as they exited the tournament after group stage.

Kenneth Choo/Gronya Somerville gave Australia the lead in mixed doubles before HS Prannoy levelled the score for India.

Anupama Upadhyaya, playing her first major team event, made it 2-1 with a 21-16 21-18 result over Tiffany Ho.

MR Arjun/Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto/Ashwini Ponnappa wrapped up proceedings for India.
