ZII JIA GRABS PLACE IN INDONESIA OPEN QUARTERS AFTER BEATING CHINESE FOE
World No.7 Zii Jia secured a slot in the quarterfinals after he posted a 20-22, 21-9, 21-16 win over China’s Weng Hong Yang at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
The Malaysian shuttler overcame a first-set letdown to decisively take the next two sets and finish off his opponent in 72 minutes.
Moreover, Zii Jia will next face world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand for a place in the semifinals.
Kunlavut marked his return to action after a three-week hiatus by pulling off a 21-10, 21-17 triumph over Priyanshu Rajawat of India.
The Thai shuttler holds a 4-3 edge in his head-to-head matchup against Zii Jia.
However, the Malaysian won their last faceoff at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last October.
SEN ALSO ADVANCES IN INDONESIA OPEN AFTER BEATING JAPAN’S NISHIMOTO
Sen also advanced to the last eight after he defeated Kenta Nishimoto of Japan, 21-9, 21-15.
The Indian shuttler cruised through the opener after taking an early 4-0 lead.
However, Sen got some resistance from Nishimoto early in the second set, as he kept the match close early on.
But the Japanese fell into a maze of errors mostly with drop shots on the net.
This allowed Sen to get some separation to finish off Nishimoto in their round-of-16 match.
Sen will next face No.2 seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark for a place in the semifinals.
INDIA’S TREESA JOLLY, GAYATRI GOPICHAND FALLS TO JAPANESE DUO
Unlike Sen, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichard failed to follow their Indian compatriot’s fate in women’s doubles action.
Jolly and Gopichand fell to Japanese duo Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara, 21-19, 19-21, 19-21.
The Indian pair barely took the first set but it was downhill from there.
Matsumoto and Nagahara out-steadied Jolly and Gopichand to tie the match and set up the decider.
The Japanese duo displayed nerves of steel in the third set with steady ground shots to finish off their Indian opponents in 75 minutes.
