SHETTY CLAIMS FIRST BWF TITLE AFTER BEATING YANG IN IOWA FINAL

Shetty claims his first BWF (Badminton World Federation) title after he beat Brian Yang, 21-18, 21-13, for the men’s singles title.

Furthermore, the 20-year-old Indian world No.31 shuttler to complete an amazing run at Council Bluffs in Iowa.

Moreover, the Karnataka native ousted former world junior champion Kuo Kuan-lin of Chinese Taipei before stunning top seed Chou Tiem-chen in the semis.

“It means a lot, it’s my first title in the senior circuit So I’m really happy,” said Shetty, after he gave India its first men’s singles BWF champion ever.

“There are a lot of positives to take away. I played some excellent badminton here and I’m looking forward to the Canada Open next week,” he added.

ZHANG HOLDS OFF INDIAN TEENER SHARMA IN THREE-SET FINAL

Zhang held off the challenge of Indian teenager Tanvi Sharma, 21-11, 16-21, 21-10, to cop the women’s singles title.

Moreover, the 34-year-old Chinese born shuttler, now playing for host United States, needed all of 46 minutes to put away her 16-year-old opponent.

Furthermore, women’s world No.19 went off to a strong start but Sharma came back roaring to an 11-4 lead in the second before forcing a decider.

It was nonetheless an impressive journey for the young Indian shutler, who became the youngest in her country to reach a BWF World Tour final.

She had to get past four higher-ranked shuttlers ,incuding No.,2 seed Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam and former world junior champion Pitchamon Opatniputh of Thailand.

SHARMA DRAWS PV SINDHU COMPARISONS AS FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT

Sharma’s metoric rise has drawn comparisons to her Indian compatriot PV Sindhu.

Furthermore, Sindhu was 16 when she won the Philippines Open and she took a bronze at 17 years old at the World Championship.

Moreover, Sharma is expected to move several notches from her current No.66 ranking after her amazing run in Iowa.

A trainee at the famed ullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad from 2016, she learned the game from her mother, Meena Sharma, who played volleyball at the DC Complex.
