SINDHU ADVANCES IN SINGAPORE OPEN AFTER BEATING DANISH FOE
Sindhu reached the Singapore Open second round after she posted a 21-12, 22-20 victory over Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark.
The Indian double Olympic medallist had a convincing opening set before steadying herself in the second set to pull off the close win.
Sindhu will next face Rio Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain.
H.S Prannoy needed three sets to outlast Belgium’s Julien Carraggi, 21-9, 18-21, 21-9.
The win sets up Prannoy against Kenta Nishimoto of Japan next.
ZII JIA WITHDRAWS FROM SINGAPORE OPEN DUE TO HAMSTRING INURY
Zii Jia was forced to withdraw from Singapore due to a nagging hamstring injury.
The Malaysian’s decision allowed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia to post a walkover victory in the first round.
“It is a difficult decision having to concede a walkover at the Singapore Open,” Zii’s TeamLZJ said in a statement.
“But after medical assessment in Singapore, Zii Jia is advised not to participate due to hamstring injuries sustained during the Thailand and Malaysian Masters,” it added.
The World No.9 is coming off a title win at the Thailand Open before placing runner-up to world No.1 Viktor Axelsen at the Malaysian Masters.
SOON HUAT-SHEVON BEAT INDIAN PAIR TO ADVANCE
Meanwhile, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai defeated India’s B. Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy, 21-18, 21-19, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The newly crowned Malaysia Open mixed doubles champions overcame fatigue to outlast their opponents and advance into the second round.
“Mentally, I feel quite tired but we have to stay focused and take care of our body (Physical) condition,” Soon Huat said.
“We hope to do better in our next match,” Shevon added.
Shevon and Soon Huat will next take on world No.1 pair Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Quiong of China for a spot in the quarterfinals.
