Peng Soon lauds Ed Sheeran after badminton match

Malaysian mixed doubles specialist Chan Peng Soon had nothing but praise for Ed Sheeran after the English singer-songwriter visited Kuala Lumpur recently.

The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist described Sheeran as a “nice guy” after the two played badminton over the weekend. Peng Soon admitted not expecting to get a call to meet the 33-year-old multiple Grammy-winning artist.

“It was a real experience for me because Ed (Sheeran) is such a nice guy,” Peng Soon recalled when he first met the British superstar. “When I got called up, I thought this was such a nice way to promote the sport and also our country.”

“If you watch his video, Ed actually mentions that Malaysians love badminton,” the Malaysian shuttler added.

Peng Soon shared he and Sheeran played for an hour before they exchanged jerseys. The mixed doubles specialist gave his CPS Badminton Academy jersey, while the British singer gave his English club Ipswich Town jersey,

Sheeran was in Malaysia for his “+-=÷x (Mathematics) Tour” Asian leg. On Saturday, he sang before more than 12,000 fans at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Peng Soon is set to announce his retirement in a 15-year career that started in 2009. He will soon focus on managing his two training centers in Penang and Kuala Lumpur for aspiring badminton players in Malaysia.
