China claims 16th Uber Cup title
The China women’s team went 24-0 in their Uber Cup campaign en route to a championship after losing to South Korea two years ago.
“During the last three years we experienced failures, and I’m happy that we could regain the title,” said He Bing Jiao.
“Last time it was a shame that we couldn’t win the Uber Cup, so over the last two years we were always ready, and we were playing at home.”
He defeated Indonesia’s Ester Nurumi 10-21, 21-15, 21-17 to secure the victory for China.
Olympic champion Chen Yufei set the tone by decisively defeating Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, 21-7, 21-16.
“The scariest thing is when people think you should win,” said Chen.
“Things become different when you assume you can win. The only thing we need to do is prepare and be humble.”
World No. 1 Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan dominated the doubles with a 21-11, 21-8 win over Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Ribka Sugiarto.
“It will probably be our last team event. It might be a sad moment for our fans, but since it is our last dance, please wish us a better life in the future,” said Chen.
This is the first time since 2012 when the same nations from both men’s and women’s won the finals.
It was also China who prevailed in 2012.
