AXELSEN FELT ‘VERY SURREAL’ AFTER BEATING LEE IN MEN’S SINGLES FINAL
Axelsen felt “very surreal” after he beat Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, 21-16, 21-8, in the men’s singles final.
Furthermore, the Danish former world No.1 got back at a past tormentor in Lee, whom he lost at the Malaysia Open.
Moreover, Axelsen copped his third title in six finals over the past 10 years.
“So many things have happened in the last 10 years. But it feels very surreal to win this for the third time in my sixth final at the India Open,” the Dane said.
“It is amazing. This is a first one as 31-year-old. But again, as I have said in other interviews, I was in the fina;l here 10 years ago, which is crazy,” he added.
DANE EXTENDS HEAD-TO-HEAD LEAD OVER LEE, TIES CHONG WEI FOR RECORD
Moreover, the Dane extended his lead to 7-2 in head-to-head matchups over the world No.20.
Furthermore, Axelsen also tied retired Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei for the most titles in India.
He reached the final after pulling off a 17-21, 21-14, 21-15 triumph over Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the semifinals on Saturday.
“After this week, I feel my motivation is coming back. Since the Olympics, I had been struggling with injuries,” Axelsen said.
“So to be here now and win the title means a lot,” he added.
